We call it the "second brain," but what exactly is it? What do we know about it today, and what are the medical applications? Five scientists addressed these questions in the public conference "The gut microbiota: towards new health practices," held at the Institut Pasteur in connection with Brain Awareness Week.

The Institut Pasteur is involved in AMAZED, a multidisciplinary project to study the mechanisms behind the emergence of arboviruses, in other words pathogens transmitted by insect vectors. The project, coordinated by the Institut Pasteur de la Guyane, brings together the Institut Pasteur and three members of the Pasteur Network in France's overseas territories (French Guiana, Guadeloupe and New Caledonia), together with external partners. AMAZED has recently been granted €2.5 million in funding.

L'Institut Pasteur est engagé dans AMAZED : un projet multidisciplinaire visant à étudier les mécanismes d’émergences d’arbovirus, c’est-à-dire de pathogènes transmis par des insectes vecteurs. Ce projet, dont la coordination est assurée par l’Institut Pasteur de la Guyane, réunit l’Institut Pasteur et trois instituts ultramarins membres du Pasteur Network (Guyane, Guadeloupe et Nouvelle-Calédonie) ainsi que des partenaires externes. AMAZED vient de recevoir un financement de 2,5 millions d’euros. 

Qui est vraiment celui que l’on appelle « deuxième cerveau » ? Que savons-nous de lui aujourd’hui, et quelles applications médicales en découlent ? Cinq chercheurs et chercheuses ont abordé ces questions lors de la conférence publique « Le microbiote intestinal : vers de nouvelles pratiques en matière de santé ». Elle était organisée à l’Institut Pasteur dans le cadre de la Semaine du cerveau.

Immunotherapy, now in widespread use as a treatment for cancer, continues to be a focus of research and to teach us more about the immune system. A new study by scientists at the Institut Pasteur has identified a novel mechanism of action of anti-PD-1 antibodies, a commonly used form of immunotherapy.

Traitement désormais largement utilisé contre les cancers, l’immunothérapie continue pourtant d’intéresser la recherche et de nous en apprendre plus sur notre système immunitaire. Une nouvelle étude menée par des chercheurs de l’Institut Pasteur identifie en effet un nouveau mode d’action des anticorps anti-PD1, une immunothérapie très répandue.

The genus flavivirus includes several human pathogens, such as Zika, dengue, West Nile virus (WNV) and yellow fever virus, which persist as major threats to global public health. Yellow4FLAVI, coordinated by Giovanna Barba-Spaeth, Institut Pasteur, comprises 13 partner institutions and is supported by the European Union with with € 8 million. The aim is to use the 17D yellow fever vaccine as a model to understand the molecular basis of long-lasting immune protection.
