Emerging animal pathogens in humans

World Organization for Animal Health - Collaborating Center (WOAHCC) for the "detection and identification in humans of emerging animal pathogens and development of tools for their diagnoses".

The Environment and Infectious Risks Unit, Laboratory for Urgent Response to Biological Threats, and Pathogen Discovery Laboratory host this WOAHCC.

WOAHCC missions of detection and identification in humans of emerging animal pathogens and development of tools for their diagnoses

This WOAH (World Organization for Animal Health) collaborating center is hosted by the Institut Pasteur. It recommends, devises, and compares new laboratory testing methods and procedures for detecting and identifying emerging animal pathogens in humans.

The WOAHCC conducts and/or coordinates scientific and technical studies. It organizes scientific and technical training for human and animal public health personnel in connection with various "one health"-type programs (which take an integrated and unified view of public, animal, and environmental health at local, national, and global level), e.g. in the field of arboviruses and emerging respiratory viruses.

In partnership with other WOAHCCs and WOAH reference laboratories (RLs), the collaborating center seeks to identify and consolidate existing expertise on detecting animal pathogens in humans and comprehensively characterizing these.

Moreover, the collaborating center forges links with other WOAHCCs and WOAH RLs, where necessary, in particular during health crises.

It should be noted that the Institut Pasteur already hosts two reference laboratories – one for Rift Valley fever and the other for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, both of which are led by Noël Tordo.

This network of reference laboratories and WOAH collaborating centers seeks to harmonize and exchange data, information and reference material to improve disease surveillance and control worldwide. (Source: WOAH)

Practical information on the "Emerging Animal Pathogens in Humans WOAHCC"

The Collaborating Center for the "detection and identification in humans of emerging animal pathogens and development of tools for their diagnoses" managed by the Institut Pasteur has a concentric organizational structure with two research teams at its core:

Where required, other Institut Pasteur units may be involved:

  • Molecular Genetics of RNA Viruses Unit (Sylvie van der Werf);
  • Lyssavirus Epidemiology and Neuropathology Unit (Hervé Bourhy);
  • Antiviral Strategies Unit (Noël Tordo);
  • Epidemiology of Emerging Diseases Unit (Arnaud Fontanet).

And more generally, all the National Reference Centers (CNRs), WHO Collaborating Centers (WHOCCs), and all the Institut Pasteur units may be called upon to contribute to the work of the WOAHCC. In a broader sense, the WOAHCC has access to the Pasteur Network and, where required, may collaborate with animal health stakeholders such as the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES), French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (CIRAD), French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), and the Alfort and Toulouse national veterinary schools.
