Training minds, advancing science: the Institut Pasteur strengthens its philanthropic program for education

News
|

Since its founding, the Institut Pasteur has been committed to training scientists and health professionals who address major global health challenges. Today, in a rapidly evolving world, this commitment enters a new phase with the launch of a structured program to support education, aimed at strengthening access, quality, and impact of the scientific training provided by the Institut Pasteur.

The program is built around four strategic projects, designed to remove economic, social, and/or geographic barriers to education in life sciences and public health, while promoting international openness, inclusion, and academic excellence.

"Education is not simply about passing on scientific knowledge:
it is a long-term commitment to training the minds that will tackle tomorrow’s scientific, medical, and societal challenges."
Yasmine Belkaid, President of the Institut Pasteur

" Together, let’s make education a sustainable engine for advancing scientific and medical excellence."
Monica Sala, Vice-president for Education, l'Institut Pasteur

A Tangible Commitment to Scientific Education

Through this support program, the Institut Pasteur offers everyone—individuals, companies, or foundations—the opportunity to actively engage in science education and the future of science through targeted, measurable, and high-impact actions.

Each contribution helps to overcome material, geographic, and/or social barriers to access to knowledge. It also strengthens our ability to deliver up-to-date knowledge, support the career paths of today’s and tomorrow’s researchers and physicians, and anticipate future health challenges.

Project 1 – A roof to study

Focus: Inclusion and the fight against student precarity

In major French cities—especially in Paris—housing costs are a major challenge for young people, and PhD students are no exception. For one third of them, over 50% of their net income is spent on housing. This reality affects their study conditions and may jeopardize their academic success.

To address this urgent need, the Institut Pasteur is implementing a dedicated housing plan for 95 PhD students per year, in partnership with the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris and the ALFI association.

  • Annual objective: €370,000 to support 95 student accommodations

  • Impact: affordable and stable living conditions for young researchers, helping them stay focused and engaged in their work

Project 2 – Science without borders

Focus: Equity in opportunities

Science and technology are evolving rapidly. To keep pace, students need access to up-to-date training, while professionals must engage in continuous education.

In many countries, access to specialized scientific training remains limited. To address this challenge, the Institut Pasteur offers excellence scholarships to students and professionals from low- and middle-income countries to attend on-site Pasteur Courses delivered at its Education Center in Paris, to enrich themselves both in theoretical aspects and in cutting-edge experimental practices.

  • Annual objective: €60,000 for 20 full scholarships

  • Impact: capacity building in local health and research systems, and a stronger international scientific network

Project 3 – MOOCs : Science for all

Focus: Accessibility

In many parts of the world, access to quality scientific training remains a challenge. Online education represents an essential solution to overcome these inequalities and reach audiences far from major global academic centers.

The Institut Pasteur is a pioneer in online scientific training on major public health topics. Since 2015, its 21 MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) have provided more than 250,000 learners in over 130 countries with access to high-quality scientific content.

Participants can complete the modules online and, if they wish, earn a low-cost certification and diploma (€150 and €750, respectively), making the training both accessible and professionally valuable.

The program will fund the creation of new MOOCs and/or the updating of existing modules to meet constantly evolving scientific and public health challenges.

  • Annual objective: €100,000

  • Impact: high-quality training accessible to all, worldwide

Project 4 – MD-PhD : Training tomorrow’s physician-scientists

Focus: Research and health

Recent health crises have highlighted an urgent need: training professionals capable of combining medical knowledge and scientific research. To address this challenge, the Institut Pasteur is implementing an MD-PhD program for medical doctors or medical students (MDs, VetDs, PharmDs) seeking a long-term commitment to research.

This program allows future physician-researchers to join an Institut Pasteur laboratory or national reference center to conduct a three-year doctoral research project, while maintaining an active connection to their clinical practice.

Each program is personalized to ensure a balance between in-depth scientific training and continuity with public health issues.

MD-PhD

  • Annual objective: €900,000 to fund 5 PhD tracks (€180,000 per student)

  • Impact: a new generation of physician-scientists at the research-clinic interface
