2003 - 2014: Unipharma-Graduates projects Leonardo da Vinci

The "Unipharma-Graduates" project was conducted from 2003 to 2014 under the European Union Programme "Leonardo da Vinci" by the Noopolis Foundation in cooperation with Sapienza University of Rome. The 11 editions of the project during this period have allowed 564 Italian Master's degree graduatesin pharmacy, chemistry, biology and biotechnologies to carry out a 24-week placement at over 40 leading European private and public Research Centres in different European countries.

2014: the new European Union Programme Erasmus +

From 2014-2015, the "Unipharma-Graduates" scheme will continue within the framework of Erasmus +, the new European Programme for Education, Training, Youth and Sport for the period 2014-2020, that has brought together most of previously existing EU programmes in the field of Education and Training, including Leonardo da Vinci.

Applicants are selected through a competitive call open to the students of the partner universities, based on CV and English language skills. In order to maximize their motivation selected trainees are allowed to choose their host centre. On the other hand, the research centres are always free to request further information, to interview potential trainees and to reject all applications if not satisfied.

The aim of the projects is, therefore, to provide an excellent scientific experience to some of the top students in the chemical, pharmaceutical and bio-technological field. The final goal is to foster a new generation of excellent Italian scientists who will spend a significant portion of their career in other European countries.

PROMOTERS

The Unipharma-Graduates scheme was started by Prof. Luciano Saso, Member of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine of Sapienza University of Rome and Scientific Coordinator of the project.

Since 2014 the Unipharma-Graduates projects are promoted by a Consortium coordinated by Sapienza University of Rome and including the Noopolis Foundation and 6 Italian Universities: University of Roma Tre, University of Rome Tor Vergata, University of Bologna, University of Catania, Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, University of Milano-Bicocca.

The European partnership of the Unipharma-Graduates projects includes at present over 40 leading research centres in the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological field, in different European countries.

STUDENTS

The project will address students in pharmacy, chemistry, biology and biotechnologies, enrolled in the last year of their graduate studies at one of the Italian partner universities. The selected candidates will have the possibility to start a 6-months placement at one of the host partners before or after the completion of their Master's Degree.

CALLS AND SELECTIONS

The selections are carried out through a public call for applications based upon competitive criteria addressed to students in Pharmacy and Industrial PharmacyChemistry and Industrial ChemistryBiological Sciences and Biotechnologies, enrolled in the last year of their graduate studies at one of the Italian partner universities, complying with the following requirements:

  • Age under 26
  • Average marks during graduate studies above 27/30
  • Experimental thesis

The applications are evaluated by a Commission composed by representatives of the International Offices of the partner Universities and by the Scientific Coordinator on the basis of the following criteria: average marks of passed examination; knowledge of English; Number of publications; Former national/international experiences (Erasmus, etc).

PLACEMENT METHOD

Detailed projects are requested in advance to the hosting laboratories.

The selected candidates receive the work programs offered by all the hosting institutions and are invited to express up to 5 preferences, well-motivated on the basis of their CV.

Their choices are satisfied on the basis of the candidates’ ranking but also evaluating the consistency between their preparation and the formative contents of the work program to be carried out in the host country on one hand, and the compliance with specific requirements by the hosting centres on the other. The CVs are then submitted to the hosting centres, which, after evaluating them, communicate their acceptance of the candidates.

PROJECTS PRACTICAL PROCEDURE

Submission of the projects proposals by the host laboratories is provided annually. The acceptance of a candidate by the host laboratory should be confirmed through a formal letter (e-mail). After the acceptance, the tutor can plan with the trainee the start date of the placement, the logistic aspects, etc.
