The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development (MAEDI) and the Institut Pasteur signed in July 2014 a grant agreement for the project: “Malnutrition and infections childhood in Africa” (MALINEA) in the framework of the Priority Solidarity Fund of the MAEDI. This project will be carried out through a partnership which brings together the know-how and the skills of the Institut Pasteur International Network in Africa – the Institut Pasteur of Madagascar, the CERMES (Niger), the Institut Pasteur of Bangui and the Institut Pasteur of Dakar -, and the NGOs Action against Hunger (Spain and France) and the GRET.

The main objective is to evaluate interactions between malnutrition and modification of the gut microbiota, and to propose new strategies of renutrition, in order to improve the care of malnourished children.  This three-year project will be implemented in Madagascar, Niger, Central African Republic and Senegal. In this framework, a first working meeting was held on 8 and 9 September at the Institut Pasteur in Paris with 25 representatives of the different organizations and partner countries. This first project is the seed for a lasting partnership between the Institut Pasteur International Network and these two NGOs.
