Antibiotic Resistance and whole One Health Approach

Antibiotic resistance is today a major public health problem causing 1.3 million deaths per year worldwide. It is a cross-sectoral problem, affecting both humans, animals and the environment. Effectively combating antibiotic resistance therefore requires a transversal approach, known as One Health, involving human, animal and environmental health professionals.

Unfortunately, these different professionals still have relatively compartmentalised visions and approaches, due in particular to the lack of common professional training around antibiotic resistance and One Health. Although initial or continuing training offers exist separately on antibiotic resistance or One Health, none combines the two or is intended for an audience of professionals from the 3 sectors.

Training aims 

The training offer, presented here, proposes to fill this gap and to decompartmentalize the 3 sectors to train practitioners of One Health = a Single Health. The training plan will include various courses whose objectives will be to provide practitioners and operators in the 3 sectors with interprofessional tools to improve practices around antibiotic resistance, the health and well-being of human beings, animals, and environmental ecosystems.

Thus the teaching units will include modules on the understanding of Public Health, the One Health policy and the interrelationships between the different human/human sectors. animal/environment, as well as the principles of epidemiology, environmental health, food safety, the One Health approach to vector-borne diseases and zoonoses, emerging infections and their social, economic and global change relationships, all in a context of antibiotic resistance.

The DU is intended for professionals from the human/animal/environmental health professions (practitioners, managers, executives, researchers) as well as an audience with training in political science.

The skills expected at the end of the DU include:

• Better understanding of the One Health dynamics of antibiotic resistance

• Understanding of One Health health systems

• Knowledge of good practices in the use of antibiotics and infection prevention and control

• Know where to find useful information to define your local epidemiology and adapt your practices

• Know how to put in place and implement solutions to correct their practices

• Know how to communicate the results of its actions (at the political level in particular)
