What is bronchiolitis?

Published the Updated

Bronchiolitis, a respiratory infection affecting infants, is caused in 60-80% of cases by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It begins as a cold with moderate fever, but can lead to coughing, difficulty breathing, wheezing and eating disorders. Marie-Anne Rameix-Welti, respiratory virus expert at the Institut Pasteur, shares essential advice on protecting infants from bronchiolitis.

Prevention:

  • Wash your hands regularly.
  • Wear a mask if you're ill.
  • Ventilate rooms and avoid public places with an infant under 3 months.

Protecting babies:

  • Vaccinate mothers in the 3ᵉ trimester of pregnancy.
  • Injection of antibodies to protect infants directly.

These solutions offer up to 80% protection against severe forms of RSV. In case of doubt or worrying symptoms, consult a doctor.
