A new CRISPR-based RNA test detects animal trypanosomes, which helps track parasites that pose a threat to livestock in Africa and monitor the transmission of human-infectious species. This study was conducted by an international consortium led by the Institut Pasteur. Its outcomes are wholly aligned with both the Institut Pasteur's long-standing mission of fighting infectious disease threats and the World Health Organization's goal of eliminating human African trypanosomiasis by 2030.

Un nouveau test ARN basé sur la technologie CRISPR détecte les trypanosomes animaux, aidant à surveiller les parasites qui menacent le bétail en Afrique et à contrôler la transmission des formes pathogènes pour l’être humain. Cette étude est menée par un consortium international piloté par l’Institut Pasteur. Les résultats s’alignent entièrement avec la mission historique de l’Institut de lutter contre les menaces infectieuses, mais aussi avec l’objectif fixé par l’Organisation mondiale de la santé pour 2030 : éliminer la trypanosomiase humaine africaine.

A new model has been developed to elucidate the seasonal dynamics of plague in Madagascar. In this country, where the disease remains endemic, and most often occurs between October and March. The associated study, which arose from a collaboration between the Institut Pasteur in Paris and the Institut Pasteur de Madagascar, paves the way for more effective eradication and prevention strategies based on a One Health approach, vital for limiting the resurgence of the disease.

Un nouveau modèle permet aujourd’hui de mieux comprendre la dynamique saisonnière de la peste à Madagascar. Une maladie toujours endémique dans cette région, émergeant le plus souvent entre octobre et mars. Issue d’une collaboration entre les Instituts Pasteur de Paris et de Madagascar, cette étude ouvre des perspectives pour le développement de stratégies de lutte et de prévention plus efficaces en s’appuyant sur une approche One Health, essentielle pour limiter la résurgence de cette maladie.

At an international conference organized jointly by the Mirror Biology Dialogues Foundation (MBDF) with the Institut Pasteur on June 12 and 13, 2025, scientists and ethicists from around the world shared their views on the risks and challenges of "mirror life." This new frontier in synthetic biology raises the possibility of creating organisms in the laboratory that would be chemical mirror images of known living beings. It is a future scientific prospect that has multiple ethical and societal implications and raises questions about our collective responsibility.
