CARD – IP Mouse Sperm and Embryo Cryopreservation Course


This one-week course presents a combination of lectures and intensive hands-on sessions to learn the most up-to-date CARD methods in mouse cryopreservation.

Recent developments from the laboratory of Prof. Naomi Nakagata (CARD-Kumamoto University, Japan) have pushed the envelope of mouse cryopreservation: i) improved female superovulation method; ii) fresh, frozen and cold storage sperm techniques; iii) optimized IVF methods. These improvements (see main references in program) have resulted in an unparalleled increase in efficiency of cryopreservation and rescue of relevant mouse lines.

The aim of this course is to introduce the newest CARD methods to researchers and technicians involved in mouse archiving and/or managing transgenic facilities and who are willing to implement these new methods in their work. These techniques will be taught directly by the team that devised them.

Each participant will have one binocular microscope and the entire set of tools, reagents and animals required to learn and practice all the methods included in the program of this course. In addition to practical sessions, the course will also include several lectures of related interesting topics for the participants delivered by experts in each field.


Hands-on topics that will be covered during this cryopreservation course:

  • Making pipettes and embryo handling
  • Superovulating/Ultra-superovulating female mice
  • Isolating unfertilized mouse oocytes
  • Isolating and cold storage/shipping of mouse cauda epididymis
  • Freezing/thawing mouse sperm and IVF
  • Fresh mouse sperm and IVF
  • Freezing/thawing 2-cell IVF-derived mouse embryos
  • Vitrification of mouse oocytes and embryos
  • Embryo transfer techniques in mice (oviduct, uterus, NSET)
  • Vasectomy of male mice (scrotal and abdominal)

    There is open application for the course. Candidates should send a recent CV and a letter describing how they will benefit by attending this course and how relevant is the course material to his/her work. Additional documents are welcome, at the discretion of participants, including supporting letters by supervisors (where appropriate), reference letters, etc... A copy of the passport is mandatory. Applications should be submitted online, and will close on March 25th 2016.

    Review and selection of participants will be done by the Teaching Committee and results will be communicated by April 15, 2016. Registration and payment for selected participants will be accepted from date of communication to June 1st, 2016. Applicants who are not selected as one of the 20 participants will be placed in an ordered queue.  If there are any cancellations or unpaid registrations on June 1st, 2016 the next applicant from the queue will be notified that there is an available spot and given the chance to register.

    20 participants will be selected to participate in this workshop. We anticipate this being an intensive hands-on training which requires some previous experience in mouse embryology. Trainees will be chosen from available applicants based on experience, interest and their perceived ability to return to their home institutions and train others in the techniques that were taught in the course.

    The course registration Fee is 1100€ (1050€ for ISTT member )

    This fee includes participation in the entire course, all materials and reagents, and one official course dinner. Lunches are not included, but participants will each receive a student card and full access to the campus cafeteria and restaurant that offer lunches at reduced prices (<10€/lunch). Hotel costs are not included in the registration fee. There are various hotels around Institut Pasteur main campus. Recommended hotel: Le Meditel  (5 minutes walking distance to the campus and where all speakers and instructors will also be lodged).
