A Definition of Bioinformatics

We have recently written a definition of bioinformatics for the Encyclopedia of molecular pharmacology (Springer Verlag). With the growing interest in bioinformatics, one has to ask what bioinformatics actually is all about.
A quick google search with the keywords bioinformatics and definition yields 23000 hits (March 4, 2002). Please try it yourself and/or have a look at our results:
