In 1953, Moore and Frerichs described a new mycobacterial species isolated from a knee abscess and named it "Mycobacterium abscessus".
In 2004 and 2006 this species, M. abscessus (sensu lato), was divided into three groups:M. abscessus (sensu stricto), Mycobacterium massiliense and Mycobacterium bolletii.
The individualization of three species has been questioned recently and the here presented MLST database accepts isolates of M. abscessus sensu lato (i.e. M. abscessus, M. massiliense and M. bolletii).
The Mycobacterium abscessus MLST website contains two linked databases - one for allelic profiles and sequences, the other for isolate information. This structure offers advantages over a single database system. Further details can be found here.
