WP – 15: Coordination of training activities

Objectives

To organize short- and long-term training to Chinese and European students in the field of zoology, epidemiology, virology, and immunology.

Several forms of training will be used:
• Fellowships for exchange of scientists in the field of zoology, epidemiology, virology and immunology.
European and Chinese laboratories will commit themselves to accept and train students for periods of 3 to 18 months (budget from the P2R or through Marie Curie IIF from the EC).
• General courses in virology. A 2-week course in virology will be given at the Pasteur Research Center in Hong Kong in 2004 (funds from different sources), followed by a three-week course in virology at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2005 (funded through the P2R).
• Seminars and conferences by visiting scientists when travelling on mission to China or Europe.
• Training modules for health professionals interested in the management of highly infectious diseases will be available on the network website (see WP 10).

The detailed fellowships arrangement are under discussion between contractors. Training will be embedded in the existing WP, and will include laboratory work in virology and immunology, field work in zoology and epidemiology, and statistical analyses in epidemiology. Budget for training will come two sources: a) the Franco-Chinese grant on SARS for training exchanges between France and China (300 000 euros have been allocated for workshop and training activities between China and France on SARS research (P2R); grant coordinators: Arnaud Fontanet and HU Zhihong), and b) the EC project budget through Marie Curie IIF. The virology course in Wuhan will be funded by the Franco- Chinese grant. In addition, up to three post-doctoral one-year fellowships will be available every year for Chinese students to train in French laboratories through the Franco-Chinese grant.
