WP 10: Hospital and Laboratory Infection Control

 


Objectives

To create a multidisciplinary, sustainable and effective network of virologist, infectious disease physicians, epidemiologists and other health professionals with expertise in the infection control measure to be applied in the management of SARS patients and of SARS-coronavirus.

To assess the infection control measures taken in China in hospitals and laboratories, and data available on SARS cases among hospital and laboratory staff, plus similar experiences in Europe

 

 

Description of work

Task 1: To develop epidemiological study and to analyse risk factors related to the SARS transmission in the hospitalbased epidemics in Beijing.

Task 2: To re-assess infection control measures in hospital and laboratory settings during the past SARS control
interventions in China, Vietnam, Italy and France.

Task 3: To develop recommendations for the prevention of SARS transmission in community, hospital, and laboratory settings.


 

Deliverables

D46 Consensus-based guidelines on the management of SARS-infected patients in the hospital and laboratory setting; disseminated by publication on network website, by presentation at national and international scientific meetings, and by publication in peer reviewed journals as appropriate.

D47 Agreed core curriculum for health professionals who specialise in the management of highly infectious diseases; disseminated through the network website and through relevant national/ international professional organisations; and the development of training modules within the core curriculum described above, piloted by participants within their own organisations and subsequently available for download from the network website.

 

Milestones and expected result

M0-M12: retrospective analysis of Beijing hospital-based epidemics

M12-M30: development of guidelines for management of SARS-infected patients in the hospital and laboratory setting

M12-M30: development of core curriculum for health professionals specializing in the management of highly infectious diseases.
