Objectives
The objective of this WP will be to give a comprehensive
review of the civets farming industry in China, its economic importance
and recent development, in order to discover the conditions that
may have favoured the occurrence of SARS-like CoV in farmed and
market animals. The study of civet farming in other countries of
Asia and in Africa will provide comparative data.
Special attention will be given to identifying the species concerned,
their origin, the regions of farming, the organization of the farming
(number of animals per cages, social composition in cages, number
of animals per farm, feeding, size and type of cages), number and
diversity of animal species per farm, size of farms (intensive units
or family farms), organization of trade and marketing of animals.
The importance of the use of wild animals for food
in China, and its recent development in north Vietnam will also
be investigated, as well as exportation of this tradition to Chinese
communities in European countries.
Description of work
Task 1: Survey of farming
techniques in China, by province; information from local authorities;
Task 2: Visit of farms
in China within the different provinces concerned;
Task 3: Comparative studies
in civet farms in Africa;
Task 4: Survey in markets
and restaurants in order to establish origin of animals (see also
WP1 and 2 for diagnostic of species, and of their geographic origin);
Task5: Survey of species
involved in farming and consuming in Asia; survey of importation
and exportation of wild animals for consuming;
Task 6: Survey of wild
animals use in Europe (e.g. in France, with the help of veterinary
services).
Deliverables
D28 Recommendation for handling,
farming and consuming wildlife in China;
D29 Evaluation of impact of farming
techniques on occurrence and transmission of virus between animals
and between animals and humans;
D30 Recommendations towards animal
keepers;
D31 Recommendations towards countries
importing wildlife (customs, veterinary services, traders);
D32 Biodiversity conservation
issues: impact on wildlife conservation; re-evaluation of conservation
and trading status of species involved.
Milestones and expected result
M0-M6:
- Design and evaluation of a questionnaire, programming of field
survey.
- Inquiries on civet farms towards China’s province forestry
departments; visit of civet farms in Guangdong province; survey
in markets and restaurants; checking of identification and geographic
origin of animals (see WP 1 and 2);
- Inquiries towards African’s civet farms. Inquiries towards
EU authorities (customs, veterinary services,
CITES).
M6-M18:
- Synthesis on farming techniques and on relationships between SARS-like
CoV detection and farming techniques; writing of guidelines for
wildlife handling and farming; synthesis and recommendations on
wildlife consuming; synthesis on origin of traded animals and on
impact of wildlife biodiversity; re-evaluation of trade status of
species involved.
