American Leptospirosis Research Conference

Annual Meeting, 7-8 NOVEMBER 1997

I would like to call your attention to an upcoming meeting that could provide you with valuable information and to solicit your support. The American Leptospirosis Research Conference (ALRC) was formed in 1957 by a group of leptospirosis researchers to discuss and exchange ideas related to problems inherent in the field of leptospirosis. The ALRC as an organisation was formed the following year in response to considerable interest by other scientists. The purpose of the ALRC is to provide a forum for persons actively engaged in leptospirosis research to openly discuss results and problems. The ALRC provides a source of scientific information to all entities involved in marketing leptospiral research supplies, vaccines, and diagnostics. The ALRC has recently expanded the scope of its annual meeting to include discussions and scientific presentations regarding additional spirochetes of medical and/or veterinary importance, most notably the causative agents of swine dysentery and Lyme disease.

This meeting attracts national and international experts involved in leptospirosis and other spirochetoses. The American Leptospirosis Research Conference's 39th Annual Meeting will be held on Friday and Saturday, November 7-8, 1997 in Des Moines, IA, USA at the Holiday Inn Downtown (1056 6th Ave; 515-283-0151). For hotel reservations and hotel shuttle from the airport, call 515-283-0151 as indicate that you will be attending the ALRC meeting in order to receive the discounted room rate of $75.00 per night. Scientific presentations will be given by those willing to share their research. A tentative agenda is attached.

Sustaining membership is $200.00 per year and solidifies a very fine organisation. Executive board members receive no monetary compensation, so the entire membership fees are utilised toward maintaining a solid organisation and meeting facilities. In addition, contributions make it possible for the organisation to provide travel grants for worthy graduate students, maintain an updated bibliography and invite noted researchers in the field to our meetings. Even though your institution may not wish to be come a sustaining member at this time, we welcome additional members for an individual membership fee of $10.00 per person annually. A pre-registration fee of $35.00 is payable to the ALRC prior to the annual meeting. A late-registration fee of $45.00 is payable at the time of the meeting. All registration fees are waived to persons employed by a Sustaining member. The membership fee is not.

Information obtained from these meetings is valuable toward a globally-based co-operative effort in diagnostics, prophylaxis, and basic research of leptospirosis and other spirochetoses.
