It is a great pleasure and honor to invite you to participate in the 1st International Conference on Emerging Zoonoses, to be held on November 24-28, 1996, in Jerusalem, Israel.
During the last two decades, we have witnessed the emergence of a growing list of infectious diseases. A significant number of these infections are zoonoses - infections transmitted from animals to man under natural conditions. Some of these "new" diseases, e.g. cryptosporidiosis, are now known to be very common, while others like the pulmonary Hanta syndrome or the filovirus infections, remain rare but are menacing due to their life-threatening clinical course.
Three of the greatest achievements of modern medicine - immunization, antisepsis and antimicrobial therapy, have had a great impact on the control of many infections and in some cases have resulted in their regional or even global eradication. Paradoxically, new emerging infections are now posing a dramatic challenge to mankind and to the scientific community.
The Organizing Committee has invited top investigators in specific emerging zoonoses, as well as world-wide experts in the epidemiology of of infectious diseases. The Conference will be a multidisciplinary event with participation of physicians, veterinarians, epidemiologists, biochemists, immunologists, microbiologists, public health experts and others.
We feel confident that with the panel of experts and the planned stimulating scientific program, we can create an exchange of ideas which will contribute to the better understanding of some of the many problems caused by these diseases.
Jerusalem, the unique holy city of many religions, is celebrating its 3000th anniversary in 1996. What better surroundings could be found for this challenging event!
We look forward to welcoming you here.
Shalom,
Silvio D. Pitlik, MD
Chairman
