YELLOW FEVER IN 1983
The number of yellow fever cases and deaths notified in 1983 was considerably greater than in 1982 because of a serious epidemic that occurred in Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta) and Ghana. During the same period the number of cases decreased further in South America, where there have been no epidemics.
Africa : the total number of cases was 728, 487 of which were fatal, resulting solely from the epidemic in Burkina Faso and Ghana (Map 1). During the epidemic in Burkina Faso new and rapid laboratory diagnosis methods were developed in the field. Ecological surveillance of yellow fever in Senegal led to the detection of a new epizootic outbreak in the same place as the one that occurred in 1977-197.
