Isolé par RW ROSS, Entebbe (Ouganda), à partir d'un prélevement sanguin effectué sur un homme présentant fièvre et arthralgie, sous la référence S 27.
Prélevement effectué 22 Février 1953.
Lieu de collecte : Liteho, district de Newala (Tanzanie), 10° 13' S, 39° 30' E.
Milieu : Plateau cultivé à 700 m d'altitude.
ISOLEMENT :
Inoculation intra cérébrale sur souriceaux nouveau né le 19 Mai 1959.
IDENTIFICATION :
Cette souche présente des relations antigéniques avec tous les arbovirus du groupe A auxquels elle a été comparée.
Elle est très proche du virus O'Nyong Nyong, que CALISHER (1980) a classé comme sous type du virus Chikungunya.

Humaine : Fièvre, céphalée, conjonctivite, myalgie, arthralgie, signes hémorragiques, leucopénie, encombrement respiratoire, rash.
