The Pasteur - Paris University International Doctoral Program

Educational Program

THESIS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

A central component of the Pasteur Paris University Ph.D. program that offers additional support and guidance to the students, is a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) which follows the progress made by each of them on their chosen thesis project. Its role is to discuss the project with respect to the original aims and in light of new advances in the scientific field and the research plan for the next year and to provide advice for scientific and career issues.

Each Committee will be composed by three to four members : the Ph.D. advisor, a tutor, an expert in the domain of the student’s Ph.D. project and a member of the Doctoral School. The latter is suggested by the University, while the Ph.D. advisor suggests the names of two experts to the Program Committee. The Teaching Director of Institut Pasteur appoints the tutor based on proposals by the Program Committee, in agreement with the Doctoral School. The member of the University or the expert will serve as chair. The IP and mid-thesis University committees should be identical.

Students meet with the Committee whenever necessary, but not less than once per year. The meetings are organized by the student, in consultation with the Ph.D. advisor and the Program Committee. The meeting of the 1st year Ph.D. students takes place in spring of the first year.

All meetings should convene in the following sequence:
(1) The students will write a brief progress report that addresses research progress, courses, publications, and any additional information pertinent to the student’s thesis, to be sent to the Committee at least one week before the scheduled meeting;
(2) A brief discussion between the members of the Committee in the absence of the student;
(3) A presentation of the research progress by the student to the committee to provide an opportunity to discuss the work that was detailed in the progress report previously sent (no.1).
(4) The chair and the expert will address questions to the student (the advisor should not participate in the discussion, unless requested);
(5) A discussion in the absence of the thesis advisor;
(6) The chair will send a brief report to the Doctoral Program Office at Institut Pasteur (phd@pasteur.fr) and to the University, if required by the latter, updating the program on the student’s progress and suggestions made by the TAC for the next meeting.
