A course composed of lectures and practicals, for candidates with a biological background who seek fundamental knowledge of the transmission and control of vector-borne diseases.
Presentation
This course will be taught in French.
A comprehensive review of the natural history, ecology and transmission of arthropod-borne diseases, including the physiology of vectors, mathematical models of transmission dynamics, classic and innovative methods of control, and the likely impact of changes in climate and biodiversity.
Emphasis on laboratory and field methods, including molecular taxonomy, statistical sampling, remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Appraisal of approaches to major public health issues and the basic methodology of scientific research.
Team projects to consider controversial issues such as the use of DDT for malaria control and the global recrudescence of mosquito-borne disease.
