This course is intended for doctors, pharmacists, veterinarians and scientists, both from France and abroad, working in the diagnosis, follow-up and monitoring of viral diseases.
The course will be taught in French.
The aim of this course is to provide virologists with an up-to-date knowledge to detect and isolate viruses, to identify and/or analyse them by biochemical, immunological and/or molecular biology techniques, to select the most appropriate methods for the suspected viral infection and to adapt known methods to their particular needs.
The introduction presents viral classification, host-virus relationships, transmission of viral infections, and methods for the diagnosis of viral diseases. Subsequently, the structural and biological properties of different families of viruses relevant to medicine and veterinary science are studied.
The practical work emphasizes the most frequently used and cutting-edge techniques in virology: cell culture, isolation and detection of viruses; immunological detection; purification of viruses and nucleic acids; analysis of antigens and viral proteins; immunoenzymatic assays, immunofluorescence, western blotting. Genomic analysis: molecular hybridisation, in situ hybridisation, gene amplification, nucleotide sequencing, methods in molecular epidemiology techniques. Phenotypic and genotypic study of anti-viral resistance.
