Basic Virology

This course provides advanced training for students and scientists devoted to research in basic Virology. The course is composed of lectures given by European scientists, seminars supervised by senior scientists, round tables and practical courses organised by teams of the Institut Pasteur. Candidats must have a good knowledge of Molecular and Cellular Biology, as well as a first year Masters level in Virology.

The course will be taught in French.

Topics include: structure of viruses and expression of viral genomes; virus/host molecular interactions; strategies for virus survival and host defense; pathogenesis and antiviral therapeutical approaches; viral vectors; vaccines; epidemiology and emerging viruses.
The program of the course consists of the following sections:
1. Two weeks of general lectures on basic mechanisms of cell and virus functions.
2. One week of practical courses concerning molecular epidemiology and phylogeny of viruses.
3. Four weeks and a half of specialized lectures including experimental work on different viruses and their associated pathologies. Seminars around a theme supervised by a senior scientist and preparation of a written report.



* Full-time, except Saturdays, from September 1, to November 14, 2008 (examinations included)

The Institut Pasteur Diploma will be awarded to students having successfully completed the final examination,

This course is run in agreement with the Université Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris 6 and Denis Diderot-Paris 7 and a University Diploma may also be granted,

Credits for Masters (second year) from Universités René Descartes-Paris5, Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris 6 and Denis Diderot-Paris 7,  for students registered at this universities (masters),
