A central question for developmental biologists is how a naive cell contributes to the formation of a tissue or organ, how it acquires a specific cell fate and also how growth and regeneration are assured. We address this question in the context of skeletal myogenesis and cardiogenesis, using the tools of molecular genetics to examine cell behaviour and gene function, using the mouse as a mammalian model.
