The Sanofi-Institut Pasteur Awards have been created to encourage scientific excellence in the service of health. Inspired by the Institut Pasteur and funded by Sanofi, they support in 2012 four scientists whose research is making real progress in the life sciences and providing answers to major healthcare problems
“There is no category of science that may be called applied science. There is science and the applications of science, connected like the fruit to the tree that bears it.”
Since 1888, the Institut Pasteur has rested faithful to the idea of its founder: research and the translation of discoveries to their applications are the motivations of our institute. If at the beginning, the Institut Pasteur fabricated the products of its research, it has since progressively established relationships with industrial partners.
It is therefore natural and with pleasure that the Institut Pasteur associates with Sanofi to recognize and reward greatly talented scientists. Each has made remarkable progress in his research topic. I would like to warmly thank the members of the international jury and its President, Prof. Peter Agre. These Sanofi - Institut Pasteur Awards encourage scientists and their students to pursue their work. In addition, they shine a beautiful light on scientific research.
Prof. Alice Dautry, President of the Institut Pasteur
The importance of these awards cannot be underestimated. Despite the incredible advancements we have made in science and the fact that 50% of the world’s economic growth in the last 200 years has been as result of medical research, there is still a huge amount to achieve to meet the needs of the 7 billion people on this planet. Healthcare needs are not diminishing, they are simply evolving.

Through these awards, not only do we honour the significant scientific achievements of these four experts and their teams, but we demonstrate our commitment to them for the future. We all look forward to further findings and to see how this research eventually leads to deliver innovative solutions to prevent disease or better treat people in the future. Two INSERM students will also receive a special award in light of their exceptional biomedical research.
Sanofi is proud to partner with the Institut Pasteur for these awards. The Institut has changed the way we protect and treat people across the globe and continues to do so.
I would also like to sincerely thank our prestigious panel of judges - for their dedication to the advancement of science and improvement of health and for the time and energy during the course of the adjudication.
