Research area of the Unit
The focus of the research of the Aspergillus Unit is on the biology of Aspergillus fumigatus. Expertise is mainly in the fields of fungal biochemistry, molecular biology and immunology. Main achievements concern : (1) the isolation and biochemical characterization of > a dozen of antigens and proteins of A. fumigatus putatively involved in pathogenesis, cloning and disruption of the encoding genes and testing for pathogenicity in a murine model of pulmonary aspergillosis ; (2) the study of the host-A. fumigatus interactions with special emphasis on the analysis of the innate and cellular immunity directed towards A. fumigatus (3) the structural analysis of the cell wall and extracellular matrix of hyphae and conidia of A. fumigatus and the characterization of synthases, glycosidases and glycosyltransferases involved in the cell wall assembly of A. fumigatus.  
Contribution to the programme
Development of a strategy to control emerging fungal pathogens, such as Zygomycetes. Our project will be the understanding of antifungal drug resistance and the identification of released antigens with putative diagnostic interest.
