After the success of the 1st International Alcora Legionella Prize, the Board of Directors of Alcora has decided to award the 2nd International Alcora Legionella Prize for unpublished scientific papers, with the same criteria as the preceding event, which are defined as follows:

The bacteria Legionella causes the disease known as legionellosis; it is an emerging disease, and although knowledge has increased in recent years, many of the existing inter-relations with man-made environments are unknown and some other conditioning factors which lead to the development of the disease. This competition is established in order to try to establish effective techniques for its control, increase knowledge of the microorganism in general, of the development of the disease, as well as its biology and other factors involved.

In the 6th International Congress on Legionella, held in Chicago in 2005, some new knowledge in diverse areas was set out which modified some of the existing criteria. The application of this knowledge and its contrast in time support the appropriateness of this prize.

1.-Conditions: These prizes are for the purpose of fomenting research. Both individuals and work groups in which individuals participate only in representation of themselves may participate; under no circumstances may private or public companies or business groups participate.

Employees of Alcora will not be eligible for the prizes.

2.-Composition of the jury: The jury will be composed of a minimum of four persons and a representative of Alcora with voice but without vote. The forming of the jury will be carried out with representatives who are experts in medicine, biology and engineering, belonging to institutions of national or international prestige.

3.- Presentation of the papers: The papers, unpublished, can be presented in Spanish (Castilian) and/or English. It is an essential requirement that they are not published in any form:  Internet, newspapers, books, magazines, etc.

The unpublished papers have to be written in Arial 12 type, with a maximum of 30 pages; these 30 pages may be accompanied with other supplementary ones containing annexes, tables, drawings photographs, plans, etc.; the maximum number of additional pages will be 10.
Each paper must not exceed 40 pages. The format will be presented in DIN A4.

The subject matter of the contents must be stated in the paper by the author/authors. The contents of the attached paper are based on:

Biology: molecular, microbiology, ecology
Epidemiological aspects
Vigilance and control

None of the members of the jury may participate in the work groups competing for the prize.

4.-Prizes: The first prize will be 6,000 € (six thousand euros), and may be shared by two or more participants if the level of the papers were, in the judgement of the jury, similar in merit.

If the paper or papers obtaining the second place and in the judgement of the jury, were worthy of it, a second prize of 1,500 € (one thousand five hundred euros) is established, which may be shared by two or more participants if the level of the papers were, in the judgement of the jury, similar in merit. If the papers presented were not to be, in the judgement of the jury, of a sufficient level, they will then be evaluated as to whether they merit the second prize.  In any case, the amount of the first prize will accumulate, increasing the prize corresponding to the following competition, which would be presented in the following two years after the date established for it.

5.-Publication of the papers: Alcora reserves the publishing rights of the study or studies awarded in the medium it considers most appropriate, depending on its contents and size.

6.-Submission of the papers: The submission of the papers is open from June 30th, 2008 until June 30th, 2009. Please send your articles in duplicate: one hard copy and one Word text file  addressed to:
