Both microbiology experts and observatories for monitoring communicable diseases, these laboratories centralize data nationwide and contribute to the fight against disease.

They are structures based in state-run or private healthcare, teaching or research institutions that have been established as National Reference Centers by Ministry of Health decree for a 5-year term. Renewal is subject to appraisal by a CNR committee which reports to the Executive Director of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance.

Their responsibilities and specifications are also established by Ministry of Health decree.
