Botulinum toxins as therapeutic tools: engineering of novel molecules.

International Centre for Neurotherapeutics - Dublin City University (Ireland) Séminaire organisé par le Département de Microbiologie Abstract A unique combination of activities of type A botulinum toxin, responsible for prolonged inhibition of quantal neurotransmitter release, underlies its amazing success for treating scores of human disorders. Both clinical advances and research applications (in dissecting the complicated process of regulated exocytosis) are benefiting from recombinant creation of new toxin variants, by harnessing advantageous therapeutic features of additional serotypes into synergistically-acting composites. This will be exemplified with recently-generated chimeric forms that induce even longer neuromuscular paralysis than type A, or alleviate pain in animal models of inflammatory and arthritic pain. On the other hand, protease-inactive mutants of these neurotoxins are proving effective for the neuronal targeting of viral vectors, with subsequent expression of inserted therapeutics genes. Hygiène Hospitalière du CHRU de Besançon – Faculté de Médecine-Pharmacie Séminaire organisé par le Département de Microbiologie Résumé Le lien entre la réponse SOS chez les bactéries et l'émergence de la résistance aux antibiotiques est connu in vitro. Nous montrons ici l'importance de leur association dans un contexte clinique. Nous avons découvert que la réponse SOS, induite par un antibiotique inattendu et sans aucune activité anti-pseudomonas, a déclenché la résistance d'une souche de Pseudomonas aeruginosa à la ceftazidime, suite à l'activation de la recombinaison dans un intégron. Le clone bactérien devenu résistant s'est ensuite transmis à d'autres patients sous pression antibiotique.

The EMBO conference series "Tuberculosis 2012" is an international congress that provides a premium forum for the discussion and exchange of the recent advances of current research and novel trends related to tuberculosis, its causative agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis and related pathogenic mycobacteria. This international meeting to be held from September 11-15, 2012, will take place in the Conference centre (CIS) within the campus of the Institut Pasteur, which can host up to 500 conference delegates and is situated in the center of Paris, France. The conference will be of interest to researchers, doctors, and representatives from industry with focus on the biology of pathogenic mycobacteria and their interaction with their hosts. Participation by students and scientists in the early stages of their careers is highly encouraged. Tuberculosis 2012 will provide abundant opportunities for networking and exchange of information between senior scientists and professionals, new investigators and students.

Fourth European Workshop on Lipid Mediators

This biennial two-day workshop is primarily addressed to scientists interested in the field of bioactive lipid mediators. Scientists from across and outside Europe have been invited to share their expertise in a number of research topics that include the state-of-the-art knowledge of the biochemistry, molecular biology and physiology of lipids as signalling molecules, their involvement in inflammation, and their specific roles in several disease conditions. The workshop has two main goals: 1) to bring together researchers to discuss the latest results and developments in this area; and 2) to promote interaction and exchange of ideas among the different laboratories. For this Fourth Workshop, a special emphasis will be placed on exploring: i) the relevance of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids ii) the role of lipid mediators in the resolution of inflammation iii) the advances in lipidomic analysis iv) the prostanoid receptor pharmacology. We especially welcome graduate and postdoctoral students to attend this workshop, and a special session will be devoted to them.
